It’s often difficult to stay cool and comfortable during the hot summer months, especially if you don’t have air conditioning or have to stay outdoors. You can stay cool indoors during the day by shading and avoiding activities that heat up your home. While outside, you can seek shade and natural breezes to escape the heat, as well as wearing appropriate clothing.
Part 1 Keep your room cool
Turn off the lights in your home. Incandescent lights, and even some LED lights, generate heat while illuminating. Turning on lights only when necessary can keep the room cooler; there are also options to use other light sources, such as your cell phone’s flashlight.
Keep your windows closed during the day. While this may seem counterproductive, the fact is that opening the windows lets hot air from the outdoors into the house. Close the windows as soon as the sun rises to keep the cool air inside. If your windows are unlocked, or you feel like air is still leaking in when you close them, stuff a towel to plug the window frame gap.
Block your windows with sun shades or curtains. Hang blackout curtains during the day or put a car visor over the window. As soon as the sun rises, close the curtains all the way or open the shades to prevent the sun from shining inside.
Avoid devices that heat up the room. It’s best to eat cooler foods in the summer, or cook most of your food in the microwave or on an outdoor grill. Turn off stoves and ovens during the hottest times and keep the air as cool as possible
